The PPLP Board is now accepting nominations for our next Portsmouth Poet Laureate!

Nominations:
Names may be submitted to the PPLP Board by e-mail. Nominations should include the full name of the nominee and the current contact information. Also, briefly describe why the nominee would be a good choice to be the public face of poetry in Portsmouth and help the PPLP build community through poetry. Also, it’s a good idea to make sure that person wants to be the poet laureate and take on that responsibility for two years. Self-nominations are acceptable.

Eligibility Requirements
In addition to being willing to take on the responsibilities of the laureateship, a nominee must live in one of the eligible towns and already have a presence in the poetry community in Portsmouth.

  • Eligible towns include: Portsmouth, Eliot, Greenland, Kittery, New Castle, Newington, Rye, and Dover.
  • PPLP Board members are ineligible until 12 months have passed since leaving office.
  • Nominees should be prepared to submit poems, a biography, and answers to a set of questions as part of their application.

Deadlines, Etc.:

  • Nominations will be accepted through February 15.
  • Nominees must submit application packets in full by March 5.
  • The Selection Committee will meet on two evenings in March.
  • The public Poet Laureate announcement will take place at a Portsmouth City Council meeting in April or May, with a reception immediately following.

Selection Guidelines:
The laureateship is an honor and a responsibility.  Excellence in poetry and the ability to be the “public face of poetry” in Portsmouth and “build community through poetry” are the most important criteria for a Poet Laureate.

Poet Laureate Responsibilities:
The mission of the Poet Laureate is to create and build community through poetry in the Seacoast area. The Laureateship is a two-year term during which the Poet Laureate and the PPLP Board work in conjunction to develop and implement project(s) that will build and extend poetry throughout our cultural community. During their tenure, the Poet Laureate attends all board meetings, receives an annual stipend, and reads at the first and last Poetry Hoot of the term.
